Tivoli Cathedral

Cathedral of San Lorenzo with a notable 13th-century carved Descent from the Cross

The Duomo di Tivoli, dedicated to San Lorenzo, occupies the site of an early Christian basilica that itself replaced a Roman temple. The current Baroque façade dates from the seventeenth century, but the campanile is Romanesque.

The chief treasure inside is the Triptych of the Saviour — a remarkable thirteenth-century painted panel — and a life-size carved wooden Descent from the Cross of the same period, with five separate figures arranged around the central crucifix. The interior is otherwise typical Baroque, but the two medieval works alone justify a visit.
