Viterbo's historic centre is compact enough to cover on foot in a day, but rich enough to deserve two. The San Pellegrino medieval quarter and the Papal Palace are the twin poles; between them and around them lie Romanesque churches, Gothic fountains, and the remains of the city's Etruscan and Roman past. The Rocca Albornoz and the Civic Museum add archaeological depth. Outside the walls, the sulphurous thermal baths at Terme dei Papi have been soothing travellers since antiquity.
