Montemarcello-Magra Natural Park

Regional park covering the headland and the lower Magra river

The Parco Naturale Regionale di Montemarcello-Magra protects the wooded headland across the river from Bocca di Magra and the lower wetlands of the Magra itself. The park is small as Italian parks go — about 26 square kilometres — but it packs in a surprising variety of landscapes, from coastal cliffs and Mediterranean macchia on the seaward side to riverine reed beds and farmland in the valley.

A network of well-marked trails connects Bocca di Magra to Montemarcello and Tellaro, with shorter loops in the woods above the village. The park's visitor centre, at the entrance to Bocca di Magra, has good maps and information on guided walks. The wetlands at the river mouth are a stop on the migration routes of herons, egrets, and the occasional flamingo.
