Most visitors come to Bocca di Magra to use the boats — to the Cinque Terre, Portovenere, Punta Corvo, Palmaria, or simply along the coast — and to walk in the Montemarcello-Magra Natural Park, which covers the wooded headland on the opposite side of the river. A network of easy trails leads up through pine and holm-oak to the hill village of Montemarcello, with views over the gulf and the Apuan Alps. The Monastero di Santa Croce, on top of the hill above the village, has a pretty chapel and one of the finest views in the gulf, and the Orto Botanico di Montemarcello is a small but well-tended coastal garden. On the water, there are dive schools, small-boat hire, and the usual summer line-up of kayaks, paddle-boards and sailing lessons.
