Gelateria Alberto

A small gelato counter on Via Fieschi, well-known in the Cinque Terre for its inventive flavours: basil, Sciacchetrà wine, honey-and-walnut, and the standard fruit sorbets made from whatever was bought at the La Spezia market that morning.

The shop is the size of a kitchen and the queue regularly stretches across the lane in summer. Worth the wait — Alberto's is consistently named among the best gelaterie in Liguria.

A story
The basil-flavoured gelato — pale green, made from the local Genoese basil that also goes into the pesto — is the house signature. Alberto first served it in the 1990s as a curiosity and now sells out by mid-afternoon most summer days.
