The hills above Loano were the site of a significant engagement in November 1795, when the French Army of Italy defeated the combined Austrian and Piedmontese forces at the Battle of Loano. The fighting took place on the slopes inland from the coast, where the terrain — steep ridges and narrow valleys — determined the course of the action as much as the commanders' decisions.
A modest memorial marks the historic ground. The battle is little remembered today outside specialist military history, but it was a decisive French victory that cleared the way for Napoleon's Italian campaign the following year.
