Loano

Western Ligurian seaside town on the Riviera delle Palme, where Roman bridges survive beside the Aurelia road.

Loano is a seaside town on the Riviera delle Palme in western Liguria, set along the ancient Via Julia Augusta — two Roman bridges still stand, including the “Pontetto” now buried beneath the modern Aurelia road.

The town was abandoned during the Saracen raids of the 9th and 10th centuries, its population fleeing to the mountains. It revived after 1263 when it became a fief of the Doria family, who encouraged resettlement with generous tax concessions. The Palazzo Doria, with its 16th-century loggia overlooking the sea, remains the centrepiece of the old town. Today Loano is a popular beach resort, quieter than its neighbours along the coast.

Getting There

Loano sits on the main Genoa–Ventimiglia railway line, with regular services from Genoa (around 1 hour) and Savona (30 minutes). The station is a short walk from the beach. By car, the A10 motorway has an exit at Borghetto Santo Spirito, about 4 km east of the town centre.

The nearest airports are Genoa (Cristoforo Colombo) and Nice Côte d'Azur, both roughly 90 minutes by road. From Nice, the drive along the coast on the A8 and A10 is particularly scenic.
