Olive Groves and Wine Terraces

The hillsides around Onzo have been cultivated in terraces for centuries, with dry-stone walls holding the thin soil in place on slopes that would otherwise be unusable. The dominant crops are olives — pressed into a light, mild oil that is one of the characteristic products of this stretch of Ligurian hinterland — and Pigato grapes, a local white variety that produces a golden, aromatic wine sold across the region.

Walking through the terraces in late October, when the olives are being harvested by hand and the vines have turned amber, is one of the more quietly memorable rural experiences in inland Liguria. Several of the small producers around Onzo and the neighbouring comune of Ranzo sell directly from the farm.
