The limestone crag above the town was fortified as a Byzantine stronghold — Castrum Petrae — and rebuilt by the bishop of Albenga in the twelfth century before passing to Genoa in 1385. The consolidated fortress now houses changing exhibitions of porcelain, prints, and antique furniture, along with an extensive library, a bar, and a restaurant. The views over the coast and the old rooftops below are worth the climb alone.
