Day Trips

The paths of the Monte di Portofino promontory connect several rewarding destinations. San Fruttuoso Abbey, a 13th-century Benedictine monastery reachable only by foot (about 2.5 hours each way) or by boat, is one of the finest medieval abbeys on the Ligurian coast — and in the cove below the abbey lies the famous Christ of the Abyss statue. The church of San Nicolò di Capodimonte on the west side of the promontory offers panoramic views between Camogli and Punta Chiappa. The beach at Paraggi, 3 km along the corniche road, is the closest good swimming spot to Portofino. Cervara Abbey opens its cliff-edge gardens for guided tours on selected weekends.
