The small harbour square is Portofino's living room — ringed by pastel-coloured houses, a handful of very expensive cafes, and an endless parade of yachts. In summer the chairs are packed with people watching other people, which is essentially the point. Come early in the morning before the day-trippers arrive, when the light is soft and the fishermen are still mending nets, to see the village at its most genuine.
