Cathedral of the Assumption

Romanesque cathedral at the heart of the medieval old town

The Concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta stands at the top of the old town, a substantial Romanesque building that has been rebuilt and extended repeatedly since the 11th century. The facade is relatively plain; the interior rewards a closer look, with a carved pulpit and a crypt beneath the nave that predates the main structure. Next to the cathedral stands the baptistery, one of the oldest surviving Christian buildings on the western Riviera.

The cathedral square is the natural destination for anyone who has climbed through the old town's lanes. From the terrace beside it, the view takes in the coastline from Cap Martin in France to the cliffs dropping toward Sanremo — on a clear day you can make out the curve of the bay all the way to Bordighera.
