Como War Memorial rises by the lake as one of the city's sharper modern architectural notes. Dedicated to local soldiers killed in the First World War, it is also tied to the rationalist and futurist currents that made Como unusually important in twentieth-century Italian architecture.
The monument is easy to include on a lakeside walk near Tempio Voltiano and the waterfront gardens. It will not take long, but it adds a different register to Como: less villa romance, more hard-edged interwar memory and design.
