Lombardia is one of Italy's best-connected regions. Trains link Milan to Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Pavia, and Mantua regularly and cheaply; most journeys are under an hour. Where trains don't reach, buses fill the gap. Milan's two airports — Linate and Malpensa — have direct rail or bus connections to the city centre. On the lakes, ferries are the most pleasant way to get between towns, and in summer they run frequently. Taxis work fine for short hops but are expensive; rent a car if you want to explore the smaller lake villages or mountain valleys on your own schedule.
