Milan's foremost art gallery, housed in a Baroque palazzo in the Brera neighbourhood. The collection covers Italian painting from the 13th to 20th centuries, with particular strength in northern Italian Renaissance work — Mantegna's Dead Christ, Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin, and Caravaggio are all here. Hayez's The Kiss (1859), the painting that became a symbol of Italian Risorgimento, is one of the most visited works.
Allow 2 hours. The Brera neighbourhood itself — cobbled streets, art galleries, and the Orto Botanico di Brera hidden in a courtyard — is worth a wander before or after.
