Sacro Monte di Varese

The Sacro Monte di Varese is one of nine Sacred Mounts in Lombardy and Piedmont listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A cobbled path winds uphill through dense chestnut forest past fourteen baroque chapels, each containing life-sized terracotta figures depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. The sculptures are vivid, sometimes unsettling — not museum pieces but devotional objects intended to stop you in your tracks.

The path begins at the first chapel in Santa Maria del Monte village and climbs about two kilometres to the hilltop sanctuary. The walk takes around 45 minutes at a gentle pace, longer if you stop at each chapel. At the top, the terrace in front of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte opens onto a panorama across the Po plain, with the Alps — and on clear days Monte Rosa — filling the northern horizon.

The village at the top has a handful of restaurants and cafes where you can recover with a coffee before the descent. A funicular (the Vellone–Sacro Monte line) connects the lower town to the sanctuary if you prefer not to walk both ways. The site is free to enter; donations are welcome.

A story
The Sacro Monte was constructed between 1604 and 1680, at a moment when the Counter-Reformation Church used spectacular sacred landscapes as visual argument against Protestantism. Each chapel was designed by a different artist, and the fourteen stations were meant to carry pilgrims through the Mysteries of the Rosary as they climbed — so that by the time they reached the sanctuary, they had, in a sense, already completed the journey of faith in their minds.
