The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta stands on the western side of Asti’s historic centre, a large brick Gothic church that looks almost fortress-like from some angles. Its campanile and patterned brickwork are among the strongest visual anchors in the city.
Inside, the mood softens. Frescoes, chapels, and layered decoration make the cathedral feel less austere than the exterior suggests. Give it time rather than treating it as a quick box to tick; it is one of the clearest signs that Asti was once a rich and competitive medieval commune.
