On the other side of the main road from Rione Monti, Aia Piccola is the quieter and more authentically residential trulli district. Many of the trulli here are still lived in, and you will notice laundry on the lines and vegetable gardens wedged between the old walls. The tourist pressure is noticeably lower, which makes it the more pleasant place to wander.
Aia Piccola has around 400 trulli, fewer than its famous neighbour but arranged with a pleasing informality that comes from centuries of organic growth rather than tourist management. It is also the neighbourhood where the Trullo Sovrano, the only two-storey trullo in existence, can be found.
