Castelsardo's old town rewards slow exploration — the lanes inside the castle walls are narrow and steep, and nearly every doorway in the upper town has a local woman weaving baskets at it. The castle at the summit has the best views on the Sardinian northwest coast. The Elephant Rock, a few kilometres out of town, adds a genuinely strange geological and archaeological detour.
