The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta is Alcamo's Chiesa Madre, set just off Corso VI Aprile near Piazza Ciullo. The church has medieval origins, but most of what you see today comes from a major 17th-century rebuilding.
Inside, look for the painted vaults and sculptural work linked with the Gagini family, whose marble altars and figures appear across Sicily. The attached sacred art collection is useful if you want to understand how much of Alcamo's art history came through its churches.
