Alcamo sits inland from the Gulf of Castellammare, between Palermo and Trapani. It is not as polished as the coastal towns, but it has a real western Sicilian centre: Corso VI Aprile, Piazza Ciullo, old churches, a castle, and a civic life built around wine, markets, and evening walks.
The town's best sights are close together in the centre. The Castle of the Counts of Modica gives the place its medieval weight, while the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta and smaller museums hold the art and devotional history. Above town, the Bosco di Alcamo Nature Reserve on Mount Bonifato offers a cooler, greener escape with views back toward the coast.
Alcamo works best if you are already exploring western Sicily by car. It is a practical base for nearby beaches and hill towns, but its own charm is slower and more local.
