Borgo Schiro

Borgo Schiro is an abandoned village in the hills of the Monreale municipality, built during Mussolini's agricultural reform programme of the 1930s. The regime constructed dozens of these borghi rurali across Italy and Sicily in the fascist period, intended to house rural workers and showcase the productivity of reclaimed land. Borgo Schiro was built but eventually depopulated as the region's agriculture changed and people moved to the cities.

The abandoned houses and public buildings — some with faded fascist-era iconography — sit in a landscape of terraced farmland, quietly decaying. The site is accessible by road but not officially maintained as a tourist attraction; visits are informal. It is best combined with other sights in the Monreale area and appeals mainly to those interested in 20th-century history or in the atmospheric quality of abandoned places.
