Eastern Temples

The Eastern Hill of Selinunte holds three temples designated E, F, and G — the largest group in the park and the one that rewards the longest visit. Temple E, partially restored to standing, is the centrepiece. Temple F stands nearby in ruins, its massive stone blocks lying where they fell in the 4th century BC. Temple G was one of the largest Greek temples ever attempted — its scale rivals the Temple of Zeus at Agrigento — but was apparently never completed; it exists today as an immense chaotic field of fallen masonry, including single column drums taller than a person.

The eastern hill was outside the main city walls and appears to have been a sacred precinct separate from the urban core, dedicated specifically to major religious buildings. The combination of the reconstructed Temple E, the romantic ruins of F, and the ambitious incompletion of G makes the eastern zone the most varied and interesting part of the park.
