The Sanctuary of Malophoros sits on a low hill west of the main acropolis, separated from it by the valley of the Modione river. It was one of the most important sacred sites in the Selinunte area, dedicated to a goddess whose identity combines elements of Demeter and Hecate. The sanctuary predates the main city and appears to have been a place of worship since before Greek colonisation, suggesting it was adopted from an existing local cult.
The remains include a large altar, a sacred precinct wall, and the base of the main temple. The site is less visually spectacular than the main temple zones but has an atmosphere of its own — it sits slightly apart from the busiest areas of the park, and the surrounding landscape of rocky Mediterranean scrub gives it an appropriately ancient feeling. Combine a visit here with the nearby Gaggera hill where other small sacred structures have been identified.
