Spiaggia Sabbie Nere (Black Sand Beach)

The black sand beach on the northeast side of the island is one of Vulcano's more photogenic spots. The volcanic sand absorbs heat intensely — on a sunny day it becomes too hot to walk on barefoot by mid-morning — and the contrast between the dark beach and the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea makes for striking scenery.

The beach is a short walk or cycle from the port along the coast road. It can get crowded in August, but the snorkelling in the clear water just offshore is good, and on calm days you can swim out and feel the warmer patches where thermal water seeps up through the seabed.
