Piazza Grande

Arezzo's main medieval square is one of the most dramatically composed public spaces in Tuscany: it slopes, it's irregular, and it's ringed by buildings from different centuries — the Romanesque apse of Santa Maria della Pieve on one side, Vasari's Renaissance loggia on another, medieval towers and palazzo facades filling in the gaps.

On the first Sunday of each month (and the preceding Saturday), the square fills with antique dealers for the Fiera Antiquaria, one of the largest and best-known antique markets in Italy. The rest of the time it's quiet, with outdoor tables from the surrounding bars. Twice a year — in June and September — the Giostra del Saracino, a historic jousting tournament, is held here with full medieval pageantry.

A story
The Piazza Grande slopes noticeably from one end to the other — a deliberate medieval design choice that allowed water to drain and made the space more usable as a marketplace. Giorgio Vasari, the artist and art historian who catalogued the lives of Renaissance painters, designed the loggia on the north side in 1573; he was born in Arezzo and considered it his home city.
