Cortona makes a good base for the eastern side of Tuscany. Arezzo, with its famous Piero della Francesca frescoes, is half an hour by train. The lakeside town of Castiglione del Lago on Lake Trasimeno is a similar drive, and the medieval hill town of Montepulciano with its Vino Nobile wine cellars is 40 minutes away by car. Across the Tuscan-Umbrian border lies Perugia, an hour by car or train.
