The historic centre is small and walkable but steep. The Piazza della Repubblica is roughly halfway up the hill; the Medici fortress is at the top, about a 20-minute climb on cobbled streets. Decent walking shoes are essential.
The town has a small fleet of electric shuttles that connect the lower car parks with the centre — useful in midsummer or for the steep return climb from the valley side. The Etruscan tombs and Santa Maria delle Grazie al Calcinaio outside the walls need a car or taxi.
