Fortezza Nuova is the younger of Livorno’s two great fortresses, a brick Medici stronghold wrapped by canals in the heart of the city. From outside it still reads as military architecture; inside, it has softened into a park-like space with grass, trees, and views back toward Venezia Nuova.
It is best visited as part of a walk through Livorno’s canal quarter. The fortress does not have the heavy museum feel of some Italian monuments, but it explains the city’s planned-port origins and gives you a rare patch of quiet above the water.
