Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori

The Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori is housed in the Villa Mimbelli, a handsome 19th-century villa set in its own park in the southern part of the city. The museum's collection centres on Giovanni Fattori, Livorno's most important artist, and the broader Macchiaioli movement — the 19th-century Italian painters whose loose, light-filled technique anticipated French Impressionism.

Fattori's large military paintings and his small coastal studies are both well represented, and the collection includes works by other Macchiaioli painters including Silvestro Lega and Telemaco Signorini. The villa setting is pleasant, and the park provides a good place to sit before or after visiting. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday; check hours before visiting as they vary by season.

A story
Giovanni Fattori was born in Livorno in 1825 and became the leading figure of the Macchiaioli — the Italian movement that preceded Impressionism by a decade. While French painters were still locked in academic convention, Fattori and his contemporaries were working outdoors on the Tuscan coast, painting light and shadow in bold patches of colour.
