Monte Poro Lighthouse

Active lighthouse on Elba's southern headland, reachable on foot

The lighthouse on Monte Poro stands at the western end of the bay from Marina di Campo, on a rocky headland that juts into the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is an active lighthouse, maintained by the Italian Coast Guard, but the exterior and the surrounding terrain are openly accessible. The summit sits amid dense macchia mediterranea — rosemary, cistus, tree heather, and arbutus — with the white tower rising above the scrub. A footpath leads up from the road below; allow 30 to 40 minutes from the nearest roadside parking, following a trail that climbs steadily through the maquis. There is no staffing and no visitor facility, so bring water.

The views from the headland are the real reason to make the climb. To the east, the arc of Marina di Campo's beach curves along the bay. To the south and west, on a clear day, the smaller Tuscan islands are visible — Giglio, Giannutri, and further off, Monte Argentario on the mainland coast. The lighthouse is worth combining with a walk along the coastal path that runs east from the headland, connecting back toward the beach. Afternoon light on the water is good, but the best visibility for the island views tends to come in the morning or after a Tramontane wind has cleared the haze.
