Sant'Ilario in Campo

Elevated hilltop village above Marina di Campo with sweeping coast views

Sant'Ilario in Campo sits at around 350 metres on a ridge northwest of Marina di Campo, and the view from its southern edge is the best elevated view of the bay available from land. The beach at Marina di Campo is visible in full, curving along the bottom of a green valley, with the sea beyond. The village itself is small — a cluster of stone houses around a parish church, a handful of streets — but the panoramic terrace on the south side of the village is the destination. Come in the morning when the sun is behind you and the light is on the water; by afternoon the haze tends to build and the colours flatten.

By road from Marina di Campo the distance is about 5 km, climbing steadily through chestnut and oak forest. A walking trail also connects the village to the lower coast, usable in either direction; the descent on foot to the bay takes around an hour and a half depending on conditions and pace. Sant'Ilario pairs naturally with San Piero in Campo, which lies along the same ridge a few kilometres to the southeast — both villages can be visited in a single half-day loop by car, or combined into a longer hillside walk. There is a small bar in the village that serves coffee and basic food, but don't count on it being open outside of summer.
