Santuario di Maria Santissima della Fontenuova

Address Piazza Giusti 305, 51015 Monsummano Terme

The shrine that dominates Monsummano's main square was built in 1602 to house a miraculous image of the Madonna discovered at a nearby spring. The Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando I de' Medici, financed the construction, and the result is a substantial late-Renaissance church with frescoes by Giovanni da San Giovanni and a graceful arcaded porch facing the piazza.

Inside, the dim chapels and stuccoed walls feel out of proportion with the small town outside. The sanctuary is the focus of an annual September pilgrimage, but most days it sits quiet and half-empty. Free entry; usually open mornings and late afternoons.
