Montalcino Cathedral, dedicated to San Salvatore, stands in the upper town with a sober neoclassical face. It is not the most romantic building in Montalcino, but it is part of the town's civic centre and worth a short look while wandering.
The cathedral works best as a pause between the fortress and the lower lanes. Do not expect the drama of Siena or Florence; this is a small-town church with local importance rather than a blockbuster monument.
