Tombolo della Feniglia

Wilder southern sand spit with a long pine forest cycle path

The southern tombolo, the Feniglia, is the wilder and more interesting of the two. The road is closed to cars: a single 7 km path through the umbrella pines runs the length of the spit, with the sea on one side and the lagoon on the other. It is one of the loveliest cycle and walking routes on the Tuscan coast.

The beach itself is broad and unspoilt, with no lidos at all on the long central stretch — bring water and shade. There are deer, wild boar and herons in the pinewoods, and birdwatching hides along the lagoon shore. Park at either end and walk or bike in.

A story
Caravaggio is said to have died on this beach in July 1610, fevered and exhausted after walking from Porto Ercole in search of a boat that had sailed without him. A small plaque near the eastern entrance marks the supposed spot.
