Ezra Pound wrote these poems in 1945 while imprisoned by the US Army in an open-air cage at the Disciplinary Training Center north of Pisa, awaiting trial for treason. The view of the Pisan plain, Mount Verruca, and the distant Apuan Alps haunts the sequence. They are difficult but extraordinary, and they give Pisa a strange place in 20th-century literature — the city as seen from inside the cage of one of the great and politically catastrophic modernists. The volume won the Bollingen Prize in 1949 to widespread outrage.
