Baptistery of San Giovanni in Corte

14th-century octagonal baptistery in green and white marble facing the Cathedral

The octagonal Baptistery of San Giovanni in Corte faces the Cathedral across the Piazza del Duomo and was built in the 14th century to a design attributed to Cellino di Nese, working in the tradition of the Pisan Romanesque style. Its green and white marble striping mirrors the Cathedral façade, giving the square its distinctive chromatic unity. The Gothic doorway bears carved decoration by Giovanni Pisano.

Inside the tall octagonal space, the font and the carved decoration are the main points of interest. The baptistery is frequently closed except in the mornings, so check the hours before including it in a tight itinerary. Even from the outside, the building makes a satisfying architectural counterpoint to the Cathedral opposite — two buildings in dialogue across a medieval piazza.
