Pistoia's historic centre is compact and remarkably well preserved. Nearly every street in the medieval core holds a Romanesque or Gothic church, a Renaissance palace, or a piece of civic architecture worth pausing in front of. The Piazza del Duomo is one of the finest medieval squares in Tuscany, and the city rewards walking slowly and turning down side alleys. Allow at least half a day; a full day is better.
