Museo della Deportazione

The Museo della Deportazione e Resistenza is dedicated to the fate of Italians, predominantly from the Prato area, who were deported to Nazi concentration camps during World War II. The museum traces the history of Italian Fascism from its beginnings to the German occupation and the deportation of political prisoners and Jews, with particular attention to the Tuscan resistance movement and the local men and women who were sent to Mauthausen, Gusen, and Dachau.

The displays are carefully researched and include photographs, documents, and personal testimonies. The museum is located in a villa in Figline di Prato, a short drive or bus ride from the city centre. It is a serious and moving institution, less visited than it deserves.

A story
Prato had one of the most active partisan movements in Tuscany during the German occupation. The museum documents what happened to the Pratesi who resisted — many of them were deported to Mauthausen and Dachau — and situates their experiences within the broader history of Fascism's rise in Italy.
