Palazzo Pubblico

Gothic town hall with Siena's finest medieval frescoes

The Gothic town hall that anchors the lower edge of Piazza del Campo, topped by the slender Torre del Mangia. The Museo Civico inside contains the Sala del Mappamondo with Simone Martini's Maestà (1315), one of the key works of Italian Gothic painting, and the Sala dei Nove with Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Allegory of Good and Bad Government — the most important secular fresco cycle to survive from the Middle Ages.
