Museo delle Sinopie

Preliminary fresco sketches recovered from Pisa, often confused with Siena's; small specialist museum

A small museum on the western side of Santa Maria della Scala, showing sinopie — the under-drawings on plaster that survive beneath frescoes — recovered from churches in the area. The exhibits give a rare insight into how Sienese painters laid out their compositions before painting the final surface.

Quiet, easily combined with Santa Maria della Scala next door.
