The Roman theatre at the northern edge of the old town dates from the first century BC and is among the best-preserved in Italy. You can view it from the medieval walls above for free, or pay to walk down into it. The tiered seating, orchestra pit, and stage foundations are all clearly visible. The theatre was buried under medieval rubble for centuries, which is largely why it survived so well.
Entry is included in Volterra's combined museum ticket.
