The Valleys of the Assassins by Freya Stark (1934): Stark's first book, covering her journeys through Persia and the Luristan mountains. She wrote it largely in Asolo. Reading it gives a sense of the sensibility that made her choose this town as her base — the same combination of classical learning and appetite for the remote.
Robert Browning: A Life Within Life by Donald Thomas: Browning spent his final productive years in Asolo, visiting first in 1838 and returning in his last months in 1889. The house where he stayed briefly before dying in Venice is marked in the town. Thomas's biography is thorough and readable, and Asolo appears as a recurring motif.
The Genius of Venice edited by Jane Martineau and Charles Hope: For understanding the art inside the Cattedrale di Asolo — the Lotto altarpiece, the Bassano, the Titian copies — this exhibition catalogue remains the best survey of Venetian Renaissance painting in English.
