Freya Stark's House

Casa Freya, home of the great Arabian explorer for over 40 years

The explorer and travel writer Freya Stark lived in Asolo for more than four decades, returning to her house here between her journeys through Arabia, Persia, Turkey, and Afghanistan. Casa Freya is a private residence on the slopes of the old town and not open to the public, but the house is easily seen from the street, with its garden and views over the valley.

Stark's connection to Asolo gives the town a literary dimension beyond its well-known artistic residents. Her books — The Valleys of the Assassins, A Winter in Arabia, The Southern Gates of Arabia — were written and revised here. She died in Asolo in 1993 at the age of 100 and is buried in the Sant'Anna cemetery. A plaque on the house marks her years in residence.
