Rocca

Hilltop medieval fortress with sweeping views from the Dolomites to Venice.

The thousand-year-old fortress crowning the hilltop above Asolo. The walk up is steep but short, and the reward is one of the finest panoramas in the Veneto — on a clear day you can see from the Dolomites to the lagoon of Venice. The fortress itself is a simple stone shell, but the setting is unforgettable.

A story
The Rocca's earliest documented history goes back to the 10th century, but Roman-era finds suggest the site was used for defence much earlier. Caterina Cornaro used it as part of her modest court after ceding Cyprus to Venice in 1489 — the view from the towers would have reminded her of what she had given up in exchange for this pleasant exile.
