Pescheria (Fish Market)

The Pescheria is the daily heart of Chioggia, an open-sided market hall near the Ponte Vigo that opens before sunrise and starts to wind down around mid-morning. The boats unload directly onto the quay; the catch goes straight onto marble slabs inside the hall: enormous turbot and sole, mantis shrimp ('canocchie'), spider crabs, cuttlefish, sardines, octopus, and the local seasonal specialities like moeche (soft-shell crabs) and bianchetto whitebait.

Even if you are not buying, walk through. The market is a working spectacle, and the stallholders are happy to talk if you have a few words of Italian. Closed Sundays and Mondays. Some of the nearby restaurants buy directly from the stalls — the fresher seafood plates in town often come from a hundred metres away.

A story
Chioggia has been one of the most important fishing ports in the Adriatic since the Middle Ages. The Venetian Republic gave the town the monopoly on supplying the Doge's table with sea bass — caught alive in the lagoon traps known as 'lavorieri', which still operate today.
