San Simeone Piccolo

A domed church facing Venice's railway station, notable as one of the city's last new churches.

San Simeone Piccolo stands across the Grand Canal from Santa Lucia station, so many visitors see its lead-covered dome within minutes of arriving in Venice. It was one of the last churches built in the city, with a classical front and a dome that makes the small building look taller than it is.

It is not one of Venice's great churches, but it is an easy architectural stop near the station and the Ghetto. The contrast between its grand form and compact scale is the main point.
