Day Trips

The lagoon islands are the obvious half-day excursions — Murano for glassblowing, Burano for colour and seafood, Torcello for its abandoned Byzantine cathedral. All are reached by vaporetto and work well in combination.

Lido di Venezia is the long barrier island separating the lagoon from the Adriatic — sandy beaches, Liberty villas, and the Venice Film Festival every September. Take vaporetto line 1 or 6 for a fifteen-minute crossing.

Chioggia at the southern tip of the lagoon is Venice's quieter working-class cousin: real canals, a morning fish market, and seafood restaurants without the tourist markup. Reach it by vaporetto #1 to the Lido, then bus #11 south through Pellestrina with a short ferry crossing — the route passes good beaches worth a stop on the way back.

On the mainland, the Veneto rewards exploration. Padua is forty minutes by train and has Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel frescoes and a superb indoor food market. Verona — Romeo and Juliet aside — has a remarkable Roman arena still in use for opera, good Renaissance architecture, and a well-preserved old centre. Vicenza is for Palladio: the Teatro Olimpico, the Basilica Palladiana, and a dozen villas in the surrounding hills. Prosecco country begins just north of Treviso and the hill road through Valdobbiadene is pleasant driving.
