The standard ascent of Monte Pelmo (3,168 m) — the so-called via normale — begins from the Rifugio Venezia, an hour's walk from the Forcella Staulanza pass above Vodo. The route is long but technically straightforward in good conditions: a steady ascent up grassy slopes and then a complex but unexposed traverse on broken dolomite slabs to the summit plateau.
It is one of the great big-mountain walks in the eastern Alps and a sensible day for fit hikers with mountain experience, though not for beginners. Allow ten to twelve hours from the pass. The Rifugio Venezia (open June to September) makes it easier by allowing an early start; an overnight there is recommended. The view from the top extends from the Marmolada in the west to the Tre Cime in the east.
