Old Çarshia (Bazaar)

The old bazaar quarter of Peja is the heart of the city and one of the better-preserved Ottoman commercial districts in Kosovo. Cobblestone lanes, low-rise shop fronts, and a few remaining craftsmen's workshops — coppersmiths, goldsmiths, saddlers — give a sense of how the city was organised before the 20th century. The Bajrakli Mosque anchors one end of the main bazaar street; the river marks the other.

Most of the çarshia has been rebuilt or renovated since the 1999 war, and the mix of shops now leans toward cafés and mobile phone vendors rather than traditional crafts. But the urban structure — the lanes, the proportions, the way the bazaar opens onto small squares — remains readable as an Ottoman market town. Mornings are most atmospheric, before the tourist cafés fill up.
